Proper welding: welding steel at low temperatures

Not every beginner knows how to cook with a welding electrode in winter or during the cold season. Why it is so important to highlight the cold period and why it is so necessary to properly weld steel at low temperatures will be discussed in this note.

In cold weather, the metal becomes less ductile, but more brittle. The same thing happens with the seam at a low negative temperature. We are not saying that welding work cannot be carried out in winter, but that it must be carried out by an experienced welder or by pre-preparing for the process.

How materials are prepared.

The electrodes must be calcined before welding. It is important that the electrodes do not have time to absorb moisture after calcination. The welding process must meet all the requirements and must be carried out in a short period of time. It is recommended to store already calcined electrodes in a thermos or a stove for piercing the electrodes at hand.

Before welding, the welding site must be treated. To eliminate roughness. The degree of processing directly depends on the installation location and the temperature of use. The lower the temperature, the cleaner and better the treatment of the welding site should be. It is mandatory to perform non-impact processing in order to avoid damage to the metal, which is brittle in the cold.

Warming up the welding site

The parts are heated to 100 degrees at the welding site if the air temperature is extremely low. All work in such cases must be carried out with preheating done to a width of about 12-15 centimeters. Only brittle non-ferrous metals are not heated: aluminum, copper and others.

Proper welding: welding technique

During the welding process, the seam must be made without interruptions from the beginning to the end. You can only stop if you need to change the electrode. After changing the electrode, the welding site must be warmed up again. The reverse polarity of direct current is chosen for welding. If thick walls are being welded, experienced welders recommend using seams in the form of a slide or cascade. To identify defects, it is necessary to heat the seam again. They are eliminated by grinding or smelting.

The convenience of the welder and comfort in winter can be considered important when welding in winter.  To do this, you need to use a winter work suit and a comfortable mask for the welder. A lightweight and convenient welding inverter will be a priority in winter, as it is most often used in everyday life and in small manufacturing organizations.

I am guided by these requirements, the welding process and welding of steel at low temperatures will be simple and convenient for the welder. And the result will be a high-quality seam!
