A welding electrode is an electrically conductive material in the form of a rod onto which a protective material of various types is applied. The rod must conduct current for welding the product using the machine. All electrodes can be divided into two types: consumable and non-consumable. A non-consumable electrode is always made of a refractory material, for example, tungsten.

A consumable electrode is made from wire types: carbon steel, alloy steel, high-alloy steel.
All electrodes are manufactured according to GOST 9466-75 and can be classified by:

• 1. the material they are made from;
  2. different applications;
  3. the thickness of the applied coating;
  4. the type of protective coating;
  5. the characteristics of slag formation;
  6. the properties of the formed weld;
  7. the type of current used in the process;
  8. the welding position.

The manufacturing technology is as follows: a protective layer is applied to the rod by pressing. This coating is needed to protect the weld being made from atmospheric influences by forming a weld pool to ensure stable arc burning.

All electrodes must ignite easily, have stable arc burning, melt evenly, and after welding, the slag should be easy to remove, and there should be no pores or cracks.
